Subject: Celebration of Desth

We watched America's strongest celebrate

For their efforts to allow Americans to die

We watched as they wheedled and traded and dealt in the death of those who trusted them

As we watched them declare victory for death

We knew this government traded our lives for more money

And for the pride of pigs in slop

This is no longer the government that survived the Civil War

But a usurped sham shameful , vicious, venal

We cannot consent to their threats or treason

There is none but us to win back what once was ours

Following his feet toward freedom

He came to a fork in the trail

He was free to continue to freedom

Or take the other way his soul pulled him toward

The way of the soul never easy he had no desire for

So he let his feet carry him toward freedom

Except he never found his precious freedom

He found desire unfulfilled much as he struggled for it

Only when he walked back to the fork

Digging through the deepest hardest depths of his soul

And took its rockier way did he find joy lies in the soul

He breathes the blues into the unburnished, battered sax

His hips slide slowly to the music's groove

The guitar player picks the top of the beat on his ax

And you know they all been there more as they move

In harmony playing in concert but also their own piece

It's all the thing that wraps it into the thing they know in a collective soul

It is the in and out in perfect time of the waves to beach and back

Over and over peaceful now , powerful, giving and taking

The turned open ground waiting accepting the sweet lips of rain

The warm and slow , now hot quick fire of the sun

That sun and moon passing as they begin and end and done.

Sometimes in Harpers Ferry I feel the presence of John Brown and his men

I still feel their fear as the troops close in

I know the rage of Brown that never was extinguished

The rage and love that drove a man who hated slavery more than he loved life

Walk on the grounds of Storer College, feel DuBois and know he still walks there on the heights

Above the Shenandoah and now above the evil of this day and it's strife

Ol Brown and DuBois answered The Spirit that called them to their fights

Part of their answers were in Harpers Ferry

And part of their answers are with us. What will we do in days rife

With hate and the evil of anger misplaced

Will we stand and struggle for all of us and light and life.

Democracy is unknowable

Unless you've experienced it

Then the loss of democracy is unthinkable

Born to be free hard tho it may be

We were not born to democracy

Democracy is learned, taught

Struggled with and for age after age

Learning or teaching democracy starts with a thought

What if a people could govern themselves

Instead of being governed by the strongest or meanest or just wiliest or richest

What if a people could decide collectively

How to live together, which way is best

It is never a given, this democracy

Always threatened under attack by those whose souls lack the fullness

Of light, unable to see

And again the people must wage the age old fight and be bold

To preserve the promise of humanity

And the fullness of our collective soul

We who work everyday, love our kids and one another

Who know our place in America is worth a fight for all that's right

We feel America, our failings and our success for each other

We cannot and will not abandon America's Dream that we might

Make a way for all the hopes born in the bosom of our universal mother

The hopes nurtured in the hearts of slaves and sharecroppers, workers, poor farmers that we might

Leave a world better for our being here and loving one another

We, our people, will not abandon all the life and lives and blood bled in night after dark night

Do not look for our backs, we will not run nor will we smother

The future promised us by all the tears of all who made hope possible, something real to hold

Today we know this fight is ours, that  the way ahead demands we be bold

We will fight for these things born in our hearts , sealed by the struggle of others for one another

I reckon one day hard as it may be

But now my being aches with every reminder since

You told me you had to leave me

I will still miss the joy of your presence

I do not want to be free

Of your hold, I cannot bring myself to fence

Off these feelings now part of the being of me

I will not pretend to understand what happened here

And why the absence of your presence

Has left the most important part of me so empty.

He knows the meaning of long, deep night

After all, he's watched many of them till the sun climbed into the sky

Watching white lines on the highway in a fight

Against sleep, waiting for light

There were nights he thought he might die

Like when the Klan threatened to cut him from asshole to appetite

Always before an election the nights when he would try

To count votes all through the night

None are easy, but none as hard as when she came nigh

To steal his sleep and remind him of the feeling of her against him tight.

First time I saw a flock of wild turkeys

Was daybreak on I-80 somewhere in Nebraska

They paid no heed as I hammered by

18 wheels smooth rappin a racket

I saw the greatest and the latest of America --and even more

The width, breadth and length of the mighty majestic land

Down to a boy's favorite toys and a girls pretty princesses

I always been learnin America but never no more than then

When I hauled a boy's balls and a girl's magic mermaids

And when I fought against sleep for hundreds of miles of endless America

You don't know, trump, this country

You, the New York con, comfortable high above us

With no time for America 's kids who are all there is --to us.

The time from. 2 am till sun up was always hardest

As he pushed his truck thru the long night

Across the Wyoming and Dakota prairies from east headed west

Or over the Appalachians or Rockies with their great height

Pushing to get to where he'd load or offload a family's best.

At 3 am the truckstops are all the blurry same, the night

Scrambles the brain and dulls and blurs the eyes, guest

Of the deep void not empty but blank , sight

Can't penetrate all that sleeps best

At 70 mph dawn slides into life

Through the shades of gray and pink and purple

Finally day's light fills the windshield and floods the cab

Now he leaves the freedom of the freeway for his family for the day

And the ache of empty replaced by the will of muscles yet sore

From just the day before

Still she lingers where he feels things he doesn't see.

My life a map of America's southeast

Travelled campaign to campaign day after night

People and things lost on the way even pieces of me ceas't

To be as rollin down the road might

Be not just a journey, but the life you lived hard and full

Loaded, large, complete never dull

Still there are those missed even till this journey ends.

I think those thoughts of her now

As if i had ever held her

And it hadn't been ages since I'd seen her

Still I can't understand how

She caught so much of me whether

Or not I gave myself or even consent

For so much of me to be wrapped and bent

To all she was and will ever be

There are those days

When memories flood now

Today's gone, thinking those ways

We used to move thru not always knowing how

To get to the place where love and peace stays

Ain't that where all are one and we tried to bow

In the direction of the light and joy at the end of our days

Together, when you had to go

Don't think I'll ever know

Why it had to be and how hard it had to hurt so

Those days where light and joy still flood when now gives til then.

Another night finds me

In morning's tiny hours

Coffee waiting, waking to see

What has befallen what we thought ours

I watch and wait those tiny hours the next assault to see

On what was once free

Our lives, for instance, target of attacks by would be tyrants

Our lives lived for our kids, our families, our community

We once acted for ourselves and others in a constant effort to balance

Now we must act to protect what is no longer sure , certainly

Freedom has never been without cost

Always a struggle in the open or in the dark watching the wolves,
now he

In whose madness of evil would be boss

In whose narcissism and insanity is only meanness and chaos

Watching no longer enough , waiting democracy

Calls us again to the bastions of truth and liberty

Watching others fight for me ?

No more

We cannot protect what we can't fight for.

I am an American

I am an American patriot

I have learned democracy

And I know my country is tainted by a blot

That blocks right now what we see

A blot that sears our collective soul, makes blood run hot

I love our people and to be

There for each other and not

Pretend not to see

I love our land, the still wild and the tamed a lot

But I love more too

I love the people like us

Wherever they live, we should find ways to do

More all together, we must

Find ways to join our voices, connect our strengths, make new

Our longing for what is just

What is right for us all and true

To a vision of our unity

You see I love all our people

And I love how we can be
-together
-at peace
-loving for loving's sake
-living love in what we do

We can love our America, our country

And not hate others

Because it's too late for we

To erect barriers

The malignant, malicious presidency didn't just begin

It's roots are not just in our lifetime

It is an ongoing struggle for what America is and when

Our America will celebrate real freedom and justice with a chime

From an eternal bell

That will loudly sound joy well

For as long as our time

Is to be.

Let us remember those who've already fought and who could see

Frederick Douglass and a Garrison who challenged a nations conscience

And Ol Abe who wandered alone through deaths awful dance

Let us remember Harriet Tubman singing out in the night--Keep On

And Susan Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Let us remember A. Philip Randolph and the always struggle of Black men for dignity

And Harvey Milk and the struggle still of gay and trans folks for equality

And please don't let us forget Joe Hill and Cesar Chavez and Dr. King (perhaps the greatest)

Who all remind us now

America is as just as our struggle is strong

And as free as we keep our vow

Freedom from Tyranny

Justice for All.

Will not easily be extinguished

In the sweet storm of civil rights

We are not soldiers just in the sun

Born of the strain of struggle

Conceived in genocide and slavery

America has never been as good as her words

But our people fought through it all

In never ending effort to make her words real

Now we face the threat once thought unimaginable

The assault on all we believed we were

Shredding our freedoms

Bullying the weak

Destroying the strong

It is now our turn and our time

To meet the struggle with strength

Standing in solidarity

Don't give in, don't give out, don't give up

Refuse his authority

Resist his power

Resist , defy, defend

As Americans always have

In town after town, state upon state

We have decided we will not quit

It is we, us who will stoke that fire no matter how late

That fire must burn

Till we destroy the fascism that will not be our fate

We will burn til all learn

That we will not bow to the gods of money and power.

Fascism, Dissent and the Outlawing of Protest

The Arizona Senate has just passed legislation to include protestors exercising First Amendment freedom of speech and association to be arrested and prosecuted under RICO laws--for protesting.

Authorities are destroying the camps at Standing Rock that were used as staging areas for the Anerican Native opposition to the North Dakota pipeline.

Trump continues his war against Muslims and immigrants.

The founders honored dissent. They were all guilty of dissent.

America was born of dissent.

Slavery in America was only abolished after a century of dissent by African-Americans, Quakers, Congregationalists and other people of faith.

Some of us have expected that Trump and his followers would bring down the Iron Heel on dissent. Now his followers in Arizona have.

Do you still doubt that we are in a dire struggle against fascism?

The ongoing assault against Muslims and immigrants is torn from the Nazi play book. Pick a minority (Jews in Germany) to blame for the woes of the majority.

We've experienced 40 years of stagnant wages and declining benefits and living standards because of unfettered and unrestrained predatory capitalism-- not because of immigrants.

One reason the predators have been able to hold us down is the dangerous weakening of the American labor movement.

I was greatly saddened to hear yesterday that the afl-cio is laying off staff in the wake of membership losses and the 2016 election debacle.

And the labor federation appears to have no strategy for growth.

Growth is possible, but it requires a strategy , resources and re-thinking.

We grew the American labor movement significantly in. 2007 and 2008 when I was the organizing director because we focused on growth.

We cannot grow without focus and without seriously engaging workers who want a better life.

Unfortunately for all of us, a vibrant democracy requires a vibrant workers movement. If the leaders of the afl- cio aren't prepared to step up to the Struggle before us, they should step aside.

A Thumbnail Moon Rose Over the Ridge

A thumbnail moon rose over the ridge

It's light too dim to shine away the shadows

But enough to be a beacon

For the early traveler

In his dark morning run

Sometimes the light too dim

To see the path

As night prepares for day

And the traveler makes a way

Sometimes the light stands alone

A sign in the sky

The light stays with the traveler

Tho the path is still a dark challenge to try.

What a Great Week of Resistance !

trumps ludicrous nominee for Labor Secretary, Putz Puzder, who for all appearances hates all labor, especially those who are forced to work him, was forced to withdraw from the confirmation process because about 20 percent of Senste Republicans were staunchly opposed to him.

trumps National Security Advisor Michael Flynn was fired by trump himself--maybe because he lied to the Vice President about his illegal calls to the Russian Ambassador or because Flynn got bad press or because he was treated unfairly or....pick a day, there was a different reason every day.

Today immigrants to America went on strike.

trump looked like a bungling fool next to urbane and smooth Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Clearly, our very successful efforts in the streets, on the phones and in Republican Congressional town hall meetings are having a great success.

Congressional Republicans are scared shitless to end Obamacare and equally scared not to end it.

The administration is lost and floundering.

But I must quickly note as my good friend John Case says we underestimated trump before, we can't afford to sell him short now.

We have a long, tough fight ahead of us--

But We Know We Can Win.

Very sorry we couldn't broadcast Resistance Radio on Wed. I was in DC caring for my daughter who had a terrible case of the flu.

When the sky grays

And the wind comes stronger

With the shortening of the days

The memories and thoughts unresolved are longer

And the light at 4 still plays

The color fades in pure effort to maintain the grace

Of lighter times and brighter skies

We know again this fight is ours

And if there be a win ours is the prize

But we stand on uneven land staring over the edge for hours

We try to make sense of a world running from wise

It is not the sparkle of our minds  but the steel honed in the soul

That will decide whether we make this fight right

And from our guts create what will be known as might.

All of us past

Monday Morning in Shepherdstown

Spending the morning and much of the day in Shepherdstown, mostly at the radio studio. Sat in on Janet Harrison and John. Case's poetry radio show. After breakfast at Betty's Diner I will be the guest on Fanny Crawfords Show about Story Telling.

Right now I'm feeling good, feeling like our resistance to the Creep is off to a very fast and very strong start.

The Women's March was incredibly heartening. The crowds were huge--4 million people--the largest demonstration in American history.

The march or marches were such a wonderful way for us and our nation to begin the Trump term.

The marches were full of some of the characteristics of movement--spontaneity and creativity. The signs and posters were so very creative and the genesis of it all was so spontaneous.

The American People reject the orange orangutan.

Democratic Senators have bested Trumps appointees over and over.

By himself John Lewis completely took any credibility that Trump might have had.

I'm told the intelligence agencies have very damning info against Trump.

Our Resustance will be hard. Trump is very serious, but we have the will and the numbers.

Si se puede!!!!

The Real Dr. King

It is critically important in these days of struggle that will continue to intensify to recall that the real Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was not just a dreamer that so many in the corporate media would have you believe.

Dr. King was a nonviolent warrior for justice and freedom for everyone. Every where. Dr. King went he challenged the existing racist and repressive order. He led marches, demonstrations, rallies, picket lines, strikes. He preached in churches.

Dr. King went to jail for all of us.

Over and over again Dr. King fought for civil rights and economic rights and peace and justice.

Today let us remember that. Dr. King said it does no good to win the right to sit at a lunch counter if you can't afford Puzder's hamburger.

Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee as he stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel watching my dear Brother James. Orange wrestle with James Bevel in the parking lot.

Dr. King and James and the rest of the leadership team were in Memphis to support sanitation workers who were on strike for the right to have a union and the fundamental right to negotiate with management over wages, hours and conditions of work.

Dr. King literally gave his life for the working poor, for economic justice , for civil rights for a all, for our labor movement, for those Jesus once called "the least of these."

Our Resistance

Our Fight to Save Obamacare

I just read an article by Nobel Laureate and NYTimes columnist Paul Krugman about the GOP being willing to repeal .Obamacare without a replacement.

Because now 30 million Americans receive get their health insurance from elements of Obamacare and because both coverage of adult children and no pre- existing conditions are so popular, the fascists have backed themselves into a hot , messy corner.

Obamacare is very controversial--Except for its Elements.

The fascists' opposition to Obamacare created the internal necessity to destroy it--despite it's Very Popular Elements.

Because so much of the coverage of Obamacare comes through. Medicaid, the destruction of Obamacare is an Attack on Medicare.

Congressional Democrats must fight the fascists by focussing on the popular elements of the policy.

The intended destruction of Obamacare is An Attack on Medicaid.

Thank God that Sen. Cory Booker of. New Jersey is planning to speak out and actively oppose the nomination of Jeff Sessions.

It is time for us all to call both our senators and tell them to oppose racist Jeff Sessions for Attorney General.

202-224-3121

That is the Capitol switchboard. Call and ask for your senators.

Unfortunately, Democrstic Senators are loathe to oppose another senator up for an appointment.
